Was Jesus Christ born on December 25th?

Download a PDF of this page
I love Christmas.  It is one of my favorite holidays.  Living in the Northwest United States I always look forward to the weather turning colder, snow blanketing the ground, and bundling up in warm clothes.  Many of us prepare for family gatherings, office parties, and strolls around town to look at all the beautiful lights & decorations.  It is a holiday with deep roots in our families and churches that go back farther than any of us can remember.

As many people who celebrate Christmas know, there are many traditions that we incorporate into the holiday season.  It is a tradition to give neatly wrapped presents to one another to show our appreciation and to bless the person receiving the gift.  Charities and food banks encourage people to give of their abundance in order to help out those less fortunate.  Children sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what gifts they would like.  Couples give each other kisses under the mistletoe.  Santa Claus and his reindeer show up at the mall.  We cut down pine trees (or more recently buy plastic trees) and decorate them with lights and ornaments in our homes.  We see nativity scenes portraying the newborn Jesus Christ in a manger.  Joseph & Mary, The Three Wise Men, the Shepherds, and their sheep are all gathered around.  A single radiant star hangs overhead in the sky.  I often wonder what it would have been like to be there during this time.  To see Christ the redeemer, the savior of man, the only begotten Son of God would have been amazing.

As I grew up and learned more about God and His Word I began to wonder how we got some of these long-standing traditions and realized that some of them seemed to be noticeably different from what the Bible says - and in many cases, absent altogether.  My purpose for sharing this information is not to be confrontational.  Instead I wish to share the truth about Christ and his birth from the Bible and you can feel free to make your own conclusions on the subject.  I recommend that you have a Bible ready so you can look up all of the scriptures that I reference to solidify them in your own mind.

Let’s start by setting the framework for this research topic.  God instructs each of us (not just our pastors) to study the Bible to show ourselves approved as workmen of the Word. (II Timothy 2:15)  He tells us to let the Bible speak for itself by rightly dividing it rather that privately interpreting it and making our own assumptions or guessing (II Peter 1:20-21)  We are instructed that the scriptures cannot be broken (John 10:35) and that we are to teach the scripture with authority and conviction (Titus 2:15) and with humility (II Timothy 2:24-25)*

With these principles in mind, let’s look at the birth of Jesus Christ.  Tradition tells us that December 25th is the date when he was born.  Looking at it from a cultural standpoint we have no reason to doubt this, but looking from a biblical standpoint there are a few discrepancies with this tradition.

According to books on Eastern customs, sheep were not put to pasture after October because it was too cold.  But Luke 2:15-16 shows the record of shepherds in the fields who came and saw the newborn child Jesus:  “..the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.”  So either the Shepherds were tending their sheep much too late in the season, or Jesus was born some time earlier than December.  We will get into this more later.

Why do we teach that there were three Wise Men (or Magi, pronounced maj-eye) when the Bible does not specify how many?  Matthew 2:1 – “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem”  Most likely they traveled in a large caravan for safety and normally travel was done in the spring, summer, or fall months.  I think because there were three gifts given, (Matthew 2:11) perhaps that is why we show three Wise Men but the Bible does not say the number of Magi who were there.

Next, we show Shepherds and Wise Men together in nativity scenes today.  Would they have arrived at the same time?  In Luke 2:16 we read about the shepherds:  “And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.”  The Shepherds clearly found a child who had just been born.  Note that they found the child in a "manger" as this is significant.  There is no record of Wise Men yet.  They came much later.

Matthew 2:11 says of the Wise Men: “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother..”  Let’s take careful note of what they found.  They were in a house, not a manger or stable.  And why would they have found a “young child” rather than a “babe” if he were just born?  The answer is that the words of the Bible are exact and Jesus was a young child at this time.  It was a significant amount of time later, in fact more than a year and three months had passed when the Wise Men arrived.  How do we know this?

In the book of Matthew, it is recorded how Herod commanded all of the children 2 years old and younger in Bethlehem to be killed after learning of Jesus’ birth. (Matthew 2:16) Why would he have done this if Christ were still a baby when the Wise Men came to honor him with gifts and pay homage to the Messiah?  The answer is that Herod knew he would have been over a year old but less than two at this time.  The Wise Men, or Magi learned of Herod’s plans and did not return to him but rather returned to their own country after seeing the young child and bringing him royal gifts of gold, frankincense, & myrrh. (Matthew 2:7-16)

Herod’s intent was to destroy what he saw as a threat to his throne, Christ the King.  Herod was not aware that although Jesus came from the lineage of David and had royal blood, he came not to overthrow a political kingdom, but to redeem mankind from their sins and make available eternal life for the believer - which is a spiritual kingdom. (Romans 10:9-10)

To find the month and year that Christ was born we can look at what we know about the time:
-King Herod was alive at the time he was born.
-The historian Josephus recorded a lunar eclipse shortly before Herod’s death
-Herod’s death occurred sometime between 7 B.C. and 1 B.C.
-There were four observable eclipses during this time:
  • March 23rd, 5 BC.
  • September 15th, 5 B.C.
  • March 13th, 4 B.C.
  • January 9th, 1 B.C.
The eclipse recorded by Josephus notes that Herod died before the feast of the Passover the following month.  The only time in which these events could have been possible was during the January 9th, 1 B.C. eclipse.**   This tells us that Jesus was not born in the year 1 A.D. but rather sometime in the B.C. era.  We will get more specific as we research this further.  First, let me elaborate on the biblical significance of the stars and planets.

God originally “wrote” his Word in the stars.  Psalm 147:4-5 says “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.  Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite."

Genesis 1:14-15 states: "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so."

We easily understand what is meant by “seasons and for days, and years” but what about “let them be for signs” do we know what that means?  These signs refer to the 12 constellations which were set up by God as symbols for his people of things present and things to come.

Constellations were established to help people remember each record of history that was recorded in the stars.  This was how God wrote his Word before it was written in a book as we know it today.  (II Timothy 3:16)  These Old Testament believers would have studied these celestial events closely and taught this information to their children thus passing it on to the next generation.  The Magi were especially versed in these celestial studies which is why they were consulted by King Herod.  The twelve constellations were not meant to be a way to attempt to predict our future, as the pretended art of Astrology would have us believe. (Isaiah 47:12-14)  Rather, via the science of Astronomy the constellations are to record the history of the past and tell of the future events as God has planned them.  In fact, some events that are written in the stars regarding Jesus Christ are still future and have not yet come to pass.  (Revelation 21:4-5)

Now, back to when he was born.  At least 16 early Christian sources show that Jesus was born after the year 4 B.C. and the majority of them pinpoint his birth late in the year 3 B.C.  Astronomical research backs this up.  The movements of the planets and the stars can be calculated very precisely using computers and mathematical algorithms today.  The reason that the Magi were able to notice these celestial events is that they were very remarkable during the time leading up to the birth of Christ.  The constellation Leo represents royalty, and during this time there was “…very noticeable celestial activity of Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Regulus (the King star), and Venus (the Queen star), and their various combinations of conjunctions in Leo during the nine months leading up to Christ’s birth”***

The written Bible lines up perfectly with the Word written in the stars in telling of these past and future events such as those recorded in Revelation 12:1-5 “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:  And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.  And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.  And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.  And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.”

Let’s take some time to break down these verses and explain what all of that means.
“A great wonder in heaven” - is a very significant celestial event and this was what the Magi saw in the stars.  It announced the birth of the King, Jesus Christ.

“A woman clothed with the Sun and the moon under her feet” -refers to the constellation Virgo. (See image) and how the moon was set in the same part of the sky at this time.  Virgo represents Mary, the woman who gave birth to the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

“..clothed with the Sun” - there is only a 21 day period within which the Sun could be seen within the constellation Virgo as it set in the West.  In the year 3 B.C. the sun would have been visible within Virgo between August 27th and September 15th.  We can narrow down the time of year he was born to this 21 day period.  However, there was only one day where the sun and the moon would have both been visible with Virgo.  That day was Wednesday, September 11th, 3 B.C.  And to be more specific, this celestial event would have only been visible during an 81 minute period in the evening between sunset at 6:18 PM and moonset at 7:39 PM.  This is the exact year, month, day, and hour that he was born.  Now let’s continue with the rest of the scripture.

“and upon her head a crown of twelve stars” - Numbers are significant in the bible.  According to the book Number in Scripture, “Twelve is a perfect number, signifying perfection of government, or of governmental perfection.  It is found as a multiple in all that has to do with rule.  The Sun which “rules” the day and the moon and stars which “govern” the night, do so by their passage through the twelve signs of the Zodiac which completes the great circle of the heavens…Twelve is the product of 3 (The perfectly Divine and heavenly number) and 4 (the earthly, the number of what is material and organic).” ****

To simplify this definition, the crown of twelve stars in Virgo is telling of the “rule” of Jesus Christ as the King (the number 12)  It signifies his heavenly throne as the Son of God (the number 3) as well as his earthly rule as a man who walked the earth (the number 4)  See scriptures:  Romans 1:4, I John 4:15, & I Timothy 2:5

“And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.” - This refers to the birth of Jesus Christ.

“and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.  ” - here we see more numbers used to describe the great red dragon, Lucifer.  He was originally one of God’s three Archangels.  The numbers 7 and 10 mean “spiritual perfection” and “divine order” respectively.  Lucifer was spiritually perfect and divinely made until he chose to rebel against God by his own free will (Isaiah 14:12-14)

“And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth” - This refers to the fall of Lucifer where he took 1/3 of the Angels to earth with him, they are known as “devil spirits” or “evil spirits” today and are the source of spiritual wickedness in our world. (Revelation 12:9, Mark 1:34)

“and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.  ” - Satan orchestrated an attempt by Herod to execute Jesus Christ shortly after he was born.  This attempted execution was foretold in the stars and also told to Mary and Joseph by God so they could flee the country and Jesus would be safe. (Matthew 2:12-14)

“And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.” - Mary did bring forth Jesus who would eventually be crucified, buried, and resurrected 3 days later and seated at the right hand of God, the throne of exaltation. (Hebrews 10:12, I Peter 3:22)

It is fascinating to see just how detailed God is when he recorded the birth of His son, Jesus Christ.  Throughout the ages he has always made this known for his people.

Jesus Christ was born on Wednesday, September 11th, 3 B.C. between the hours of 6:18 PM and 7:39 PM Palestine time.  This clear biblical and scientific evidence shows when the fulcrum of history came into this world.

It is comforting to know that God gave us eternal life through Jesus Christ and that all who believe in him will be saved. (Romans 10:9-10)

In John 10:10 – Jesus Christ said: “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

God’s desire for us is to have life more abundantly.
Merry Christmas and God Bless You.

The Home of His Power - God's Dwelling Place

September 2004

“In old testament times, God gave instructions to Moses for building a tabernacle. Later on He directed Solomon to construct the Temple. But none of these abodes was satisfactory. They were only temporary dwelling places for God and his children.”

[Before the day of Pentecost] “…the temple was a place to gain knowledge and love of God, as well as a refuge from troubles…”
- God's Magnified Word Chapter 11 "God's Dwelling Place"

Acts 17:27
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

During the Law administration of the Old Testament, people “found God” at the Temple.  This was the center of learning for God and His Word at the time.  Eventually the attitudes of the people changed and they needed to be corrected.

Acts 17:24-25,27
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

“[The] temple was not big enough for God’s extensiveness. God who inhabits eternity, needs both heaven and earth and even eternity…The temple and the tabernacle were not truly satisfactory…”

God was not to be limited to just a temple which was made by man, he wants our worship and praise all the time.

--If the Temple and the tabernacle no longer suffice for our day and time, how do we worship God?

John 4:24 - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.  [The original text reads" ..God is spirit...]

When we are born again, we have the ability to communicate with God spiritually via the manifestations of Holy Spirit listed in I Corinthians 12.  That is the worship referred to here.

--What is the temple of our lives built upon?

Ephesians 2:20-22 - And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord. In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

--What does it mean for Christ to be the Cornerstone?

I Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Jesus Christ is the way to the father, the one-and-only mediator, and therefore is the foundation from which the household of God is built.

Back in the days before Pentecost, people built physical dwelling places for God such as the Tabernacle and the Temple.

Today WE are God’s dwelling place; we have Christ-In-Us when we become born-again.
God dwells in Christ, who dwells in US powerfully wherever we go.

As we operate the manifestations of Holy Spirit dynamically, we are worshipping God perfectly, and we are God’s dwelling place.

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

The Hope

The Hope - August 2004

“In the Bible, the word “hope” is always used regarding something that is not available at the present time.  Hope pertains to something in the future; believing pertains to those things which can be had immediately.”
-The Way Magazine, 2004

I Thessalonians 4:13-18 - But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep [those who have died], that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [precede] them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord [Jesus] himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Jesus Christ is returning someday!

Verse 16 says that "the dead in Christ shall rise first" - those born again believers who have died will be raised from the dead unto eternal life.  Then verse 17 states that those of us who are still alive will be "caught up together with them in the clouds...and so shall we ever be with the Lord"

It is much more comforting to know this truth from the Word, than it is to believe what the world tries to tell us about those who are “asleep”

I Corinthians 15:51-53: What will happen when Jesus Christ returns?

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:  for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  For this corruptible [the born-again believers who are dead] must put on incorruption, and this mortal [the born-again believers who are alive] must put on immortality.

*When Christ returns we will all be changed, and receive an eternal body.

Revelation 21:4:  Not only will we live eternally, but…

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

I Corinthians 15:26:  There’s more…

The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.  (Death will be no more.)
This verse tells us that death is an enemy, not a friend.  Life is precious and each one of our lives are valuable to God and to one another.  God wants us to live and have abundance in our lives, it is never his will for us to die.

*We have the immediate victory of Christ-In-Us when we become born again.
*We have the ultimate victory when Christ returns and death shall be destroyed.  We will live out the eternal life that God gave us when we were saved.

I Peter 3:12-15

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.  And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?  But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;  But sanctify
[set apart a special place for] the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear [respect, awe]

We have the Immediate AND the Ultimate victory in Christ. We have already won!

As we set apart a special place for the Lord in our hearts, we can give an answer to every man who asks us the reason for our HOPE, which is the promise of eternal life!

Power of the Resurrection

April 2004

Power of The Resurrection

Matthew 28:6 - He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

The Words: “He is risen” were spoken at the tomb of Jesus Christ.

He remained on this earth for 40 days in his resurrected body.

During this time he was seen by over 500 people.
Signs, Miracles and Wonders were done by the Believers.

Thomas is reunited with the other Eleven Apostles after being absent when Jesus gave them instruction.
They tell him of Christ’s appearance in verse 25 of John 20.

John 20:24-25 - But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

Thomas was doubtful of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but later believes.

John 20:26-29 - And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

This appearance was probably for the benefit of Thomas and his lack of believing.
“My Lord and my God…” means that Jesus was his Lord (Master) and represented God.

John 20:30-31 - And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

This is the purpose for these records in the Word.
They were written so that people will believe that Jesus Christ was risen, and that he is the only begotten SON OF GOD.

Let's continue in John 21:1-3 - After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

Tiberias and Sea of Galilee, Looking South

John 21:1-3

“Sea of Tiberias” = “Sea of Galilee.”
[This Sea today is 13 miles long and 7 miles wide.]

This record takes place near the location where this photograph was taken

John 21:4-14 - But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. 9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. 12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. 15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

-In the morning, Jesus, standing on the shore, instructs his disciples to cast their nets over the right side of the ship. At this point they didn’t know it was him.
-They obey, and they catch more fish than they can bring into the ship.
-One of Jesus’ disciples recognizes him and tells the rest of them.
-Peter was so excited that he didn’t wait to paddle to shore; he jumped in the water and swam to meet Jesus.
-On the shore there was a fire, and when the rest of the disciples got there they broke bread and ate fish that Jesus had prepared
-In verses 15-17 Jesus tells Peter to “Feed My Sheep” three times establishing that he was responsible for all of God’s people as a leader.

Verse 25 sums up the impact of this record beautifully.

John 21:25 -  And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Several Of Christ’s other resurrection appearances are listed in:
I Corinthians 15:4-8 - He was seen of over 500, and of Paul

Jesus Christ’s ascension is recorded in the book of Acts 1:1-9

And the “Promise of the Father” from Acts 1:4 is unveiled in Acts chapter 2:

Acts 2:1-4 - And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

They received holy spirit and manifested the proof and evidence of eternal life which is speaking in tongues.  There are also 8 other manifestations available which are listed in I Corinthians 12 7-11

Many Wonders and Signs were done by the Apostles in the days following:

Acts 2:38-43
- Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

Three Thousand people were born again in a single day!

“Jesus Christ left no reason for doubt that indeed he was risen.”
Signs, Miracles, and Wonders were seen and done by believers!
People were born again by the THOUSANDS!
Our God has not changed!

Power in Discipleship

February 2004

“Power in Discipleship

This Teaching is about the power that we have as disciples of God and followers of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Jesus always did the Father’s will, so he is our example.

Who is this “power of discipleship” available to?
-Anyone and everyone who desires to love God.
You cannot be a servant (disciple) of God unless you first become a child of God.

Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Once you are born again, you can serve God fully.
There are many people out there who want to serve God.

What is a Disciple?
-A disciple is a Disciplined Follower of Jesus Christ

How we receive (utilize) this power-
This power we have as disciples comes when we follow the Lord Jesus Christ first, and then lead by our example of humility and meekness to the Word of God.

You have to follow before you can lead.

Quote:  “My weeks in Boot Camp at Parris Island taught me that you have to know how to follow before you can lead. To stretch beyond what I had previously thought were my mental and physical limits. Later, as a 2nd Lieutenant, I learned Leadership, the quintessential quality, without which no matter how great the other resources, no organization can be successful.”

-Robert A. Lutz
2001 Chairman of General Motors North America
fmr. United States Marine Corps

1 Corinthians 7:22 - “For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant [follower] is the Lord’s freeman: [free to lead, free to serve] likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant. [follower]”

As you serve, you are also leading whether you recognize it or not.

How do we lead according to God's Word?
With a humble and meek heart.

James 1:21 - Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Philippians 2:7-9 - But [Christ] made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

When do we lead?
Right Now!

Ephesians 5:16 - Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Where is our sufficiency?

II Corinthians 3: 5 - “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves……but our sufficiency is of God.”

Our power is given to us by God as we obey his Word and discipline ourselves to it!

Power in the Hope: The Final Victory

December 2003

Power in the Hope: The Final Victory

The Two Things to learn from this teaching are:
    1) The revealed mystery benefits us today.
    2) The revealed mystery will benefit us in the future.

What is the Mystery?

Ephesians 3:1-6 - For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation [administration] of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

The mystery was hidden from the ages before Jesus Christ came.  It had to be hidden or the adversary would not have crucified him.  When Christ gave his life and was raised from the dead and seated at the right hand of God, it gave access for anyone and everyone to be born again of God's holy spirit.  The mystery had been concealed until Christ ascended and the believers manifested the evidence of the new birth on the day of Pentecost.  We are now fellow-heirs with Jesus Christ of God's inheritance.  We can have Christ in us, the gift of holy spirit and eternal life!

How it benefits us Today
I Corinthians 15:1 - “Moreover, brethren, I declare [make known] unto you the gospel [good news of the mystery] which I preached unto you. Which ye [also] have received, and wherein ye stand; [in which ye stand also.]”

This verse instructs us not only to receive the good news, the hope of Christ’s return, but also to “stand” and live the mystery today as we walk with the power of Christ in us.

How it benefits us in the Future
I John 2:28-29 - “And now, little children, abide [remain] in him [Jesus Christ]; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and be not ashamed before him at his coming.”

“If ye know that he [Jesus Christ] is righteous, ye know that everyone that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

Jesus Christ is returning someday. We have that hope.
Hope [in the bible] refers to something that is not presently available. (still future.)
Believing, however, refers to something that can be seen immediately.

Who is Jesus Christ returning for?

I Thessalonians 4:13-18 - “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [precede] them which are asleep.

For the Lord [Jesus Christ] himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

This is the truth of the return of Jesus Christ written plainly from the Word.  Those who are born again and have died will be raised again.  Those of us who are still alive will be caught up together with Christ and will live eternally with him.

I John 3:1-3 - “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not.”

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and [but] it doth not yet appear what we shall be [future]: but we [do] know that, when he [Jesus Christ]; shall appear, we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is.”

“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he [Jesus Christ] is pure*.”

* Greek word hagnos- “to keep lustrous.”

When Christ returns, there will be no more death, no more evil.

Revelation 21:4 - “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Death is an enemy, never a friend.  Your life is so precious to God, to your family, to your friends.  God's will is for you to live, and live abundantly!  When we are born again we have the assurance of eternal life!

I Corinthians 15:26 - “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” (death will be no more.)

We have the immediate victory of Christ in us when we become born again.
We have the ultimate victory when Christ returns and death shall be destroyed.

I Peter 3:12-15 - “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

But sanctify (set apart a special place for) the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear (respect.)”

We have power immediately and ultimately as we believe the truth of God's Word.

God Bless You!

The Power of His Good Pleasure

November 2003

The Power of His Good Pleasure

We are God’s children. We will see the immensity of His love for us in the book of Isaiah, by way of some beautiful figures of speech. A figure of speech is any expressive use of language in the Bible.

Figures of Speech used in the Bible: Their intent is to draw special attention to the verse where they are used. They grab the reader’s attention and emphasize an important point.
Figures of speech are for our learning, and unlike where they are used in secular literature, the words of the Word are written perfectly.

Here are some examples of different figures of speech:

Simile - uses the words “like” or “as”, (or as used in the Bible): “like as” or “even as”
The two things being compared are not intended to be one and the same. It’s a comparison.

Psalm 5:12- “For thou, Lord wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” God’s favour is around us like a shield.

Acts 2:3 says “…Cloven tongues like as of fire…” (Referring to the initial outpouring of holy spirit on the day of Pentecost.)

III John 2 says: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

Metaphor - To use one thing to represent another. The two things spoken of can literally be taken to mean the same thing. Ex: “Joe” is the “Son of James & Sharon” - The two describe the same person in a different way.

Psalm 84:11 - “For the Lord God  is  a sun and shield: The Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold them that walk uprightly.” The Lord is literally our sun (light) and shield (protection) because we walk uprightly.

Antithesis - A direct opposition of one thing to another. It emphasizes the contrast between the two things. Usually uses “and”, “but”, or “so”
I John 1:5 - “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

A practical example of a figure of speech would be:
Instead of:         “The farmer’s crops need water.”
You might say:   “The farmer’s crops are thirsty.”
Crops can’t “thirst,” that is a human attribute. It must be a figure of speech. God’s word is the same in the way it refers to God.

Anthropopatheia (Condescensio):
God is Holy Spirit. He is all knowing, all powerful, and everywhere present. John 1:18 Says “No Man hath seen God at any time …” God cannot be seen by the human eye, nor can He be known by any of the other five senses. So, it is the figure of speech; “Anthropopatheia” (Greek), (or “Condescensio” in Latin) when the Word applies human characteristics to God:

Isaiah 43:25 - I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. (Anthropopatheia) “Forgetting” is a human attribute; God is “all-knowing,” He cannot forget. The point is: Our sins are forgiven because of Jesus Christ's accomplishments and resurrection.

Isaiah 49:15 - Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. (Anthropopatheia and Antithesis) It would be incredibly difficult for the mother of a newborn Child to forget about her baby, yet we are only human and it could be possible to forget. God’s remembrance of us is beyond human comprehension.

Isaiah 49:16 - Behold, I have graven [tattooed] thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls [hands] are continually before me. (Anthropopatheia) God doesn’t literally have hands with which to tattoo upon. The point is: God cannot (and will not) forget his most wonderful children.

It is an orientalism in the bible to tattoo the names of those you dearly love somewhere on your body. To say that you tattooed the palms of your hands would be an incredible thing; the human palms are far too sensitive to endure the pain of a tattoo. But God has “graven” our names there.

God’s remembrance of us is [as indelible (and unchangeable) as the lines graven in the palms of our hands.] –“Figures of Speech in the Bible”

Just like each one of our hands have a different pattern of lines; God has remembered us individually as his children. To God, we are as unique and different from each other as the palms of our hands are.

I Corinthians 12:27 - “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
Ephesians 2:19 - “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Antithesis)

It is a great thing to understand figures of speech and how they apply to the word of God.
They make reading the bible so much more vivid and alive.

God has “forgotten” our sins, but will never “forget” us.
He has “graven” us on the “palms of his hands."
He has called us to his household to be members in particular.
These are all Promises in the Word.

Let’s go out boldly keeping in mind that God “remembers” us!
God Bless You!

The Five Gift Ministries in the Church

September 2003

The Five Gift Ministries in the Church

The five gift ministries are listed in Ephesians 4 verse 11.

In this teaching we will see:
-what these gift ministries are
-their purpose
-then some of the benefits and impact that these gift ministries have in the household, and to those searching for the truth.

Ephesians 4:1- I (Paul) therefore the prisoner of the Lord, beseech (lovingly implore) you that ye walk worthy of the vocation (function) wherewith ye are called.

Paul admonishes us to walk in the calling of God.

Ephesians 4:2-8 - With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Verses 9-10 are the figure of speech parenthesis - This is a figure of speech offering an explanation and we can skip to verse 11 without losing any of the meaning of the record.

Ephesians 4:11 - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers

Here we see the five gift ministries that God gave to the Church:
Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers

Here are the definitions of these ministries according to the Random House College Dictionary, (my comments in parentheses)

Apostle: A pioneer of any reform movement. (Movement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ)
Prophet: A person who speaks for God by divine inspiration.
Evangelist: A preacher of the Gospel. (Good news)
Pastor: Of, pertaining to, or consisting of shepherds. (Flock)
Teacher: A person who teaches or instructs (The Word)

Here are the Biblical meanings of each of these ministries:

An Apostle is one who brings new light to their generation. The same revelation may have been given in the past, but it is new to this generation.

A Prophet is one who speaks for God to God’s people. They can help return lost sheep to the flock and back into fellowship with the Father.

An Evangelist is one who brings people to (an experiential) knowledge of the new birth. They see the person born again and saved into God’s household unto eternal life.

A Pastor is one who cares for and ministers to the individual needs of the household, the called out body of believers, the flock.

A Teacher is one who brings forth the accuracy and truth of God’s wonderful Word to the believers.

Here is Ephesians 4:11 from the the Amplified Bible:
And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us,] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the gospel), some pastors (shepherds of His flock), and teachers.

Why did God initiate these ministries?  We read on and find out:

Ephesians 4:12-16 - For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Ephesians 4:12-shows the effect of the energizing of these ministries.
…perfecting of the saints… (or maturing of the saints, the believers In their walk with God)
Ephesians 4:13-tells us how long these ministries will exist. (Until Jesus Christ returns, see I Thessalonians 4:13-18)
Ephesians 4:14-“That” (indicates purpose.) So that we are no longer children, spiritually speaking.
Ephesians 4:15-But… (In contrast to: being tossed to and fro, carried about…)
…speaking the truth in love…
Ephesians 4:16-Every part… (Every person has the ministry of reconciliation) …maketh increase of the body…

Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

The spoken word ministers grace and peace to those who hear it.

Ephesians 4:32 - And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

We are to be kind to one another and readily forgive people who may have wronged us or made a mistake.

So what are these gift ministries?  They are people.  God gave us the gift of people in the household who love him, serve him, and excel at the specific function that he has called them to fulfill.

God has given us the gift of people - People who operate in these gift ministries to bless the household by the spoken word, by caring for the flock, & by speaking the truth, so let’s give the gift of the household to people as we speak the Word of God.

God Bless You

The Power of Prayer - Job

June 2006

Let's begin by defining what the words "Power" and "Prayer" mean:

(Random House College Dictionary)
Power- 1) Ability to do or act; capability of doing something. 2) Great or marked ability to do or act; strength, might, force. 3) Delegated authority 4) To supply with energy.

Prayer- A Spiritual Communion with God.

-Communion- The interchange or sharing of thoughts or emotions; intimate communication.

Matthew 14:23-27
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

Jesus Christ went up into a mountain apart to pray as he so often did. This is important to note as we read on.

Matthew 14:24-25
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

In verses 24-25 he was able to walk on water because of the confidence he had in God. Is it a coincidence that he was praying before this phenomenon was done?

The obvious answer is NO!

Matthew 14:26-27
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

In verses 26-27 Jesus commands them to have no fear. Amazing accomplishments and no fear go hand in hand.

Now let's look at Job 1 (Pronounced Joe-b with a long O)

We learn in the first book of Job that he was the greatest of all the men of the east. GOD had blessed him with many possessions and a great household. He lost track of the source of his prosperity, and his overwhelming fear had allowed a hole in the “hedge of protection” of God. He would not renew his mind to eliminate his fear and it grew in his mind until he was consumed by it. Because of the influence of Satan, he lost everything except for his wife and his own life.

Verses 20-21 of Job 1 show Job’s response to all this calamity:
Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, 21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

The phrase "the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away" has been misconstrued over the years to say that God did this to Job. This is simply not true as we learn from 1 John 1:5 which says: "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."

If God is light, and in him is no darkness at all then it CAN'T be God who brought all of this evil on Job.

In the Old Testament, they did not fully understand the fullness of God and his Word, that is revealed later after Jesus Christ came and the Day of Pentecost made available the gift of Holy Spirit for everyone who believes.

It was also an orientalism to include God in every statement they would speak, so as not to even say the name of their enemy, the adversary, Satan.

It even says in the last part of the verse that "..Job sinned not, nor charged (blamed) God foolishly." We learn here that it is foolish to blame God for evil. Job didn't blame God for bad things that happen and we shouldn't either.

Job 2:7,11-13-Job is stricken with boils from head to toe, His friends come to “comfort” him. Initially their intentions were very good, but they end up doing more harm than good later on.

Job 3:25- The thing Job greatly feared came upon him. (Fear, in essence, is believing for a negative consequence.)

Job 42:5-6- Job realizes his error and asks for God’s forgiveness.
Verses 7-8 God reproves Job’s three friends v.9- They obey.

Job 42:10- The Lord turned the captivity of Job when he PRAYED for his friends. Job took the focus off of himself and genuinely showed concern for his friends, and God was able to restore him to double what he had before.

I recently heard a story about a group of people who were on a long hiking trip, how one person was struggling up the hill. The man walking behind her was also struggling and tired, but when he took the focus off of himself and helped her by lifting her backpack up to take the strain off her back, his struggle became insignificant, and he soon forgot how much his own body hurt.

Likewise, Job showed concern for others and God was able to do mighty things for him. What a great example both of these records are to us.

Job’s captivity was temporary. He had just about every good thing stolen from him, but he knew where that attack came from. He never cursed God or charged him foolishly for any evil. He was set free by believing the word of God.

Matthew 6:38- Give, and it shall be given unto you…….

Caves in the Bible Lands

February 2004

This teaching is about the usage of caves in biblical times. There are great records of people using caves for various reasons.

Caves used as a refuge or dwelling place:
David found refuge and assembled an army:
I Samuel 22:1-2
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. 2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

The record continues...
I Samuel 24:1-3
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi. 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. 3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

Saul “covers his feet” or takes a break in the cave at Engedi.
David could have taken Saul’s life in the cave, but he chose not to because he still viewed Saul as “The Lord’s anointed.”

I Samuel 24:4-6
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily. 5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. 6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

I Samuel 24:17-22 Saul is thankful for his life and gets back into fellowship with God. A Godly decision yields Godly results!

17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not. 19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day. 20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand. 21 Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. 22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

Obadiah hid a hundred prophets in a cave:
1 Kings 18:4
For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.

Caves used as Tombs:

Abraham buried his wife Sarah:
Genesis 23:19
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

Abraham was buried with his wife:
Genesis 25:9-10
And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

-“Zohar the Hittite”-The Hittite tribe was located where Turkey is today.
-Today, what is thought to be the traditional site of the cave of Machpelah is covered by a mosque

Lazarus:
I recommend reading John 11:1-45 in your own personal study time.
Here is verse 38: Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Jesus Christ goes on to raise Lazarus from the dead in verses 43-44

Jesus Christ himself was buried three days and three nights in a cave:
Matthew 27:59-60
And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

Matthew 28:5-6 He is risen!
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

These are some of the examples of how people used caves in biblical times.

“It is one of the remarkable features of the Bible that it contains enough to occupy the greatest intellects for a lifetime, and yet the simplest soul can read and understand, and in reading with an obedient heart, find God himself.” -Eerdman’s Handbook to the bible

Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
